Canadian Opera Company announces new season
TORONTO - The Canadian Opera Company has announced its upcoming season schedule, including a production of Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte" from Oscar-nominated Canuck director Atom Egoyan.
Egoyan's production of the comedy will be conducted by Johannes Debus and will probe the themes of "love, temptation and deceit," according to a news release.
The production will run for 10 performances beginning on Jan. 18, 2014.
Other highlights include a production of Donizetti's "Roberto Devereux" starring American soprano Sondra Radvanovsky, a version of "Peter Grimes" starring Ben Heppner and the company's premiere performance of George Frideric Handel's "Hercules" from director Peter Sellars.
Among the other singers set to grace the stage next season are Canadian diva Adrianne Pieczonka in "Un ballo in maschera," American bass-baritone Eric Owens in "Hercules" and bass Ferruccio Furlanetto in "Don Quichotte."
The season will open with Puccini's "La Boheme," directed by Canadian-born Tony Award winner John Caird and conducted by Italian Carlo Rizzi.
Italian soprano Grazia Doronzio and Canadian soprano Joyce El-Khoury will star in the production, which opens Oct. 3.
