The holiday season is all about spending quality time with loved ones, or in some celebrities’ cases, kicking them to the curb.

Last year Zooey Deschanel filed for divorce from Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard on Dec. 27, just three days before Russell Brand pulled the same less-than-festive move on Katy Perry.

The year before, Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens, Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds and Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter all chose the week before Christmas to announce their splits.

So naturally this begs the question; which celebrity duo will be this year’s holiday season casualty?

If the rumours prove true, the most likely candidate to find herself single come New Year’s Eve is none other than unlucky-in-love starlet Britney Spears. The “Scream & Shout” singer is at the centre of a recent Star report which claims fiancé Jason Trawick is planning to dump the mom-of-two after she fulfills her X Factor obligations.

“Jason has told Britney’s entire family that he’s planning to leave her so that Britney will have a support system when he breaks the bad news,” a source told the tab.

This comes a month after a source told US Weekly “the romance is gone” between the pair, adding Trawick often “puts her on speaker phone so friends can hear her nagging.”

Breakup buzz has also been building around actor Orlando Bloom and his supermodel wife of two years, Miranda Kerr, with their hectic careers said to be keeping them on opposite sides of the world for long stretches at the time. The latest rumour of impending doom centres around famed modelizer Leonardo DiCaprio, whose flirtatious friendship with the Victoria’s Secret model has reportedly been raising eyebrows around NYC.

And while opposites do attract, growing apart is often the biggest culprit in a split, and that certainly seems to be what’s happening between Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth. While the off-on couple are said to be planning to tie the knot in Palm Springs next June, the shy Aussie may opt to start the New Year with a clean romantic slate considering his fiance’s rash of off-the-wall behaviour.

While 22-year-old Hemsworth has been throwing himself into his career, currently shooting Paranoia in Philidelphia, Cyrus seems to be having a coming-of-age crisis, her uncharacteristic behaviour coming in waves ever since she chopped her hair off in August.

Within the last month alone the former Hannah Montana star’s rebellious behaviour has included hitting the stage with a topless stripper, grabbing her crotch at the VH1 Divas Concert and cupping a naked stripper’s butt during her 20th birthday bash. It’s doubtful Hemsworth, who seems far more reserved, will find this behaviour amusing long-term.

Of course, Christmas Miracles do happen, and history may not repeat itself this year, but we’re banking on at least one of Tinseltown’s famous twosomes to expire before the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1.
