Doctor Who assistant Karen Gillan has said it was her idea to sex up her role as Amy Pond.

Gillan, 22, plays the role of the Doctor's sidekick in the new series.

She was introduced to the public in the first episode wearing a police uniform, complete with mini-skirt and handcuffs, which has led some critics to say they are sexing up the show when they don't need to.

However, Gillan has said that it was her idea to bring a bit of glamour to the role.

She said: "I worked with the costume designer and we just thought that was one of the things that Amy likes to wear. Most 21-year-olds do wear clothes like that. She has her own style but aspects of my style."

Her co-star Matt Smith seems impressed. He said: "She's kind of sexy, Amy."
