NEW YORK, N.Y. - Actress Lindsay Lohan was arrested Thursday in New York City after police said she hit a woman during an argument, then hours later was charged in California for a June crash in which her Porsche slammed into a dump truck.

The "Mean Girls" and "Freaky Friday" star was arrested at 4 a.m. and charged with third-degree assault.

She left a police precinct nearly four hours later with a black jacket pulled over her head. She was wearing leggings, a green mini dress and high-heels, and drove off in a black SUV with a driver, a woman and another man who was seen going in and out of the precinct.

She allegedly got into the spat with another woman at Club Avenue, in Manhattan's Chelsea section. She struck the woman in the face with her hand, police said. The woman did not require medical attention.

Lohan's publicist did not immediately return a call for comment.

The arrest is Lohan's latest brush with law enforcement in New York City.

She was involved in a NYPD investigation in September after alleging a man had assaulted her in a New York hotel, but charges against the man were later dropped.

Also in September, the actress was accused of clipping a man with her car outside another Manhattan nightclub, but prosecutors chose not to move ahead with charges.

In October, police were called to her childhood home on Long Island after a report of a fight between her and her mother. An investigation revealed "no criminality."

Santa Monica Sgt. Richard Lewis said the California charges were filed Thursday morning, but he declined to release more details until a formal press release could be issued. Court officials could not immediately confirm the charges.

The filing comes nearly six months after the actress crashed while on her way to a movie set. She was taken to the hospital but returned to the set of the film "Liz and Dick" hours later.

Lohan's attorney did not return messages seeking comment.

The California case could trigger a probation violation for Lohan, who remains on informal probation in the state for a necklace theft.

In May, she was cleared of allegations that she struck a Hollywood nightclub manager with her car.

"Liz & Dick," in which she portrays screen icon Elizabeth Taylor, premiered on Lifetime on Sunday.

Lohan also recently filmed "The Canyons," an indie film written by "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho" author Bret Easton Ellis.

This immature excuse for a lady wants to get away with murder. She is "trouble"looking for a place to happen and I'm not sure that a lengthy stay in jail will do any good. However, allowing her to walk free invites more episodes.

This train wreck gets way too many breaks. If anyone else pulled half the crap she does, they would have been locked up long ago. Does Hollywood have a lot insane judges?! This is the only reason anyone would continue to giver her the same lax treatment and expect her to change. Rehab hasn't helped her, she needs to be put in jail, and stay there for her entire sentence!

There are a lot of celebrities out there who don't get into trouble...and people who think what lindsy does is ok...well come on...she puts herself in that position and she thrives on it....its her only recourse...u can't tell me that when she does something that would make other people do jail time is ok.  She's ****....and she is the only one who can help herself...i don't agree with people who say that she's being dissed too many times and she doesn't deserve it...yes she does..she should grow up and get her priorities strait

She doesn't get movie and television roles because of her talent, she gets them because the producers know people will watch just to see her fail in the roles, thus guaranteeing a large viewing audience. There is also the directors ability to blame her when a movie fails so that damages can be collected from her for her causing the movie to fail.  I consider any production she is in as a comedy of errors, and her as a walking, talking train wreck.

I need to know just one thing. Why in the name of God IS NOT arrested and getting jailed , do her whole time, and please stop telling the public that the jails are over crowded, it may be true but I know for a fact that the Joblows on a street would do their time, what's so special about this one personthat she's always getting away with grave accusations. If she's a mental problem, for eveyone's sake, please have her put away and treated to the extent of her maladie. She's spoled to the core, bullies all around her, and, pray tell, where in the hay did anyone use her for insulting the famous Elisabeth Taylor ??? Come ladies and gentlemen, use everything you've got to put her where she needs be; before she hurts someone seriously... She's got no rights to do what she's doing ... to anyone, not ANYONE WHOSOEVER !!!

Ok Lindsay, you are now left with 4 options: 1) Walk to your destination 2) Take a cab 3) Take the bus or 4) have someone drive you!!!  No one appears to be safe when you are behind the wheel!!

Some ppl should not be issued drivers licences!!!!

What does it take to get arrested? Doesn't anyone else see a serious pattern of violent behavior here?

Just so I am clear on this, after a few too many martinis and fat lines, she stole the necklace, drank some more, drove home drunk, side swiped a pedestrian, eventually made it to the nightclub and then smacked someone in the face?

Just the kind of person you want portraying Elizabeth Taylor. Hope she got paid millions by those responsible film execs.

everybody is handling these outbursts wrong. she wants the attention which makes her a person of interest. do you see how she gets off of almost everything she is arrested for. the more publicity we give her the more she will continue to do all those bad girl things. ignore her little baby tantrums and she will disappear. we all know how bad a driver she is, yet people continue to step in front of her car when she is behind the wheel. those people should be arrested for wasting our tax-payer dollars (-police) trying to make themselves some money or there claim to fame. yes lindsay hit me with her hand, her car, what ever. when she is in a club stay away from her unless that's your sole purpose there, is to get your 15min. of fame. stop fussing over her and she will realise that we are not going to keep putting her name and picture in the news and papers. Lindsay's 15min of fame will be over. then we can all start talking about somebody else.

This is a bit harsh, don't you think? I wouldn't defend her actions (a hit and run, seriously?) but this still isn't right, yes, i get it, she's screwed up and ****ed a lot of  people off. But screw up and screwed up is different, She has proven to be a pretty good actress in the past-or else she wouldn't have gotten this far, even with her constant publicity antics. If she wasn't a good actress people wouldn't be so interested in writing about her screw ups, because putting up a story about a nobody wouldn't bring in much of an audience. And really, who are we to judge anybody? A lot of people in the real world do coke and meth and what not, and there are a lot of people who shoplift and get DUIs as well, when we look at Hollywood we all put them on this insanely high pedestal of expectations and we have this illusion that they are some extraterrestrial race of perfection void of any human error. Even in the "Celebrities' before and after baby bodies" gallery, do you think they magically got that way 'just because they're celebrities' ? They had to work their ass off in the gym and stay on strict diets just like the rest of us, the only reason their end result is better is because they were motivated by our inevitable critizism if they didn't all come off looking like Miranda Kerr. It is this constant invasive attention (or obssesion) of their personal lives generated by the public that either makes or breaks them--depending on their ability to thrive or suc****b to the stress that comes along with fame. You're probably thinking in this case Lindsay Lohan is clearly not meant for Hollywood. You may  be right. But that only means we can  judge her career and not her person.

There is something wrong with all those people in a night club at 4am. They should also investigate everyone as well as the person she allegedly assaulted for being there at that time, just isn't natural. Can't figure out these people that spend their hard earned money, lots or not lots, in some two bit club just to make the owner rich. Total stupidity.

She is just some drunk spoiled brat who is treated different than the rest of the population is for the same offenses. The Judges are "wooed" by her and turn to mush.....useless Judiciary and Liberal Judges.

She reminds me of one of the Manson family members. She is pure trouble and will either end up dead or commit suicide.

In a weird way I pity this very immature child/woman, look at the dysfunctional family she comes.  Her Father has obviously never grown up and her mother is an attention seeking excuse for a Mother. I'm not saying that this excuses her behaviour, but just adds to it. She should go to jail, serve her time, then disown her family, maybe then she might have a chance at a so called normal live. Drew Barrymore did it, and look at her now.
