Toronto rapper charged in death of boy, 7
MISSISSAUGA, Ont. - A funeral service is scheduled Friday morning for a seven-year-old boy killed in a New Year's Day collision that has resulted in charges against a Latino rapper and his mother.
Jaboub Favila was a passenger in a minivan that was struck by a Hummer H2 on Highway 401 in Mississauga shortly before 5 p.m. on New Year's Day.
Provincial police said the Hummer did not stop and was found abandoned by investigators.
Jose Olmedo Renteria, 30, of Toronto, was arrested on Highway 401 near Cobourg, Ont., on Jan. 4 and faces charges of dangerous driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death, and failure to remain at an accident.
The website torontohispano.com says Renteria, known as Mic D, has appeared at concerts and in nightclubs in Toronto, and his video "Something Good" has over a million hits on YouTube.
Police say Renteria's mother, Luisa Baladaris, 63, of Toronto is charged with obstructing police.
Torontohispano.com says Renteria is known for his unique style of rap and hip-hop that merge rhymes with salsa, reggae, dance hall and techno.
It says Renteria was born in Ecuador and came to Canada with his mother and brother in 2000.
The site says Mic D is considered one of the leading Latin rap and hip hop artists in Canada and one of the most popular figures in rap music in Ecuador.
