Like The Lord of the Rings before it, New Zealand native Jackson has borrowed liberally from his birthplace’s unspoilt landscape to bring J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit to life. As a result New Zealand’s tourism industry is expecting an upturn of visitors as movie lovers embark on their own unexpected journey in search of the place they’ve nicknamed Middle Earth.
But whilst movie sets and scenery are all well and good, wouldn’t it be better if we could pack our knapsacks and set off to Middle Earth itself? After all Wellington and Christchurch have their charms, but a trip to Rivendell and The Shire seems infinitely more enjoyable.
