It's the spurs that do it for us. While Robert Rodriguez's films are generally heavy on action and exploitation elements, "Desperado," the second in his El Mariachi trilogy, slows down long enough for El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) to consummate his newfound friendship with sexy bookstore owner Carolina (Salma Hayek). In a candlelit room, the two make love as Carlos Santana's "Bella" plays in the background and Banderas rolls the spur of his boot along Hayek's body. All the more impressive is the fact that there is no nudity - instead Rodriguez conveys the sensuality of the moment through close-ups and subtle editing. Ay carumba!
