Gangster Squad shoots its way into cinemas this week. Starring Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone it’s a glitzy affair set in the crime-ridden streets of LA in the 1940s and 50s. It’s also just the latest example of Hollywood’s love affair with gangsters, a film genre that’s wowed cinemagoers down the years with its heady cocktail of Dons, dames and deadly conflicts.
