James Cameron loses to Kathryn Bigelow
We do not know for sure that Kathryn Bigelow felt any sort of schadenfreude upon winning both the Best Director and Best Picture Oscars for "The Hurt Locker" (2009). We can only imagine that she felt some sort of special satisfaction, though, given that her film beat out that of her ex-husband James Cameron in both categories. That film, by the way, was a little movie called "Avatar." Now, personally, I enjoyed "Avatar" more than "The Hurt Locker," but we can see why the Academy would deign to honour Bigelow's more serious, politically charged work over a sci-fi epic that people actually enjoyed.
