The move: The hard sell
What happened: In the early '90s Cher was a bona fide movie star, but threw it all away to star in a series of embarrassing late-night skin care infomercials, apparently as a favor for a friend.
The fall-out: You don't have a career as long as Cher without becoming "Saturday Night Live" fodder at least once, and SNL host Christina Applegate did an ample job imitating the ageless singer in the sketch show's spoof "Focus on Beauty II." Cher eventually bounced back with a hit album, but it took a while. "I'm kind of stupid when it comes to things," she told "Entertainment Weekly" some years later. "I've always just done what I wanted and it's just worked out. Not this time. I really screwed up.''
