Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon told "Mojo" magazine that the band's seminal '90s alt rock hit was inspired by an encounter she had with LL Cool J. Assigned to interview the rapper for "Spin" she assumed they'd get along swimmingly but things didn't quite pan out that way. The song pokes fun at her naivety in assuming an art rocker and hardcore rapper would have anything in common with a spoken word interlude on which she asks: "Hey Kool Thing. Are you going to liberate us girls from the male, white corporate oppression?" and lyrics quoting LL songs "I Can't Live Without My Radio" and "Goin' Back to Cali."
