Dam-Funk — Toeachizown

In today's music world, it seems as if every artist tries to one up each other with how mysterious and bland they can be. Personality, it seems, is for squares.

Enter Dam-Funk (pronounced Dam-Funk), the Los Angeles-based, self-proclaimed "Ambassador of boogie funk," who marries Prince's sexed up freakiness with 21st century hip-hop production. One look at the man's straightened hair, wrap around shades and meticulously groomed facial hair and you know he's not fucking around.

With track titles like "Searchin' 4 Funk's Future" and "Love Is Hear 2nite (I Can Feel It)" it's clear the Purple one and George Clinton had a great influence on Dam-Funk's music. But he's not content to just stick a better beat on what came before. Using vintage instruments, Dam-Funk creatse a future sex world reminiscent of Deltron 3030 and Dr. Octagon.

Unlike Stones Throw labelmate Mayer Hawthorne, Dam-Funk isn't going to please everyone with his retro-pastiche, but that's not the point. This is an artist with a clear vision of what he wants, whether we're along for the ride or not.
