The gritty and brilliant Southland returns for its fifth run over on TNT this week. In case you haven’t yet seen it, the critically acclaimed cop drama is one of the freshest crime shows on TV. But for all its innovations Southland still centres on a stereotype that’s as old as the genre itself.

You see, just like pants, TV cops tend to come in pairs. It’s something we like to call the ‘cop couple constant,’ a tradition that’s almost as old as the idiot box itself. We’re not too sure why they do it, we just know that save for the odd maverick, the police are better when paired up. So in honour of the latest additions to the roster of detective duos, join us as we look back over the best small screen cops who’ve fought crime over the decades.

Unfortunaely this is not the famous Cagney and Lacey duo... Tyne Daly (on left) but police woman on right is Meg Foster ( a short lived part for her - fist 6 part series 1982) Sharon Glees replaced Meg as Cagney. So this picture although is correct is not the duo that was the best loved team.

Are you ****ng me?? Where is Jerry Orbach and Chris Noth/Jesse Martin/Ben Bratt from Law & Order?? Orbach and Greene did almost 200 episodes together - Orbach did almost 300 himself - how can you not include the central characters from the longest running crime drama. ever. It's still popular in re-runs - safe to say, most of your list is no where nearly as popular. Sorry, but your list is bogus.....

Due South...a "death wolf", are you nuts.  The wolf is supposed to be deaf.  Proofread people, proofread.  Which school did you graduate from or did you?

"Castle"  Here we go again, proofread: "genre that's scene" you mean "genre that has seen" as in see, not a scene.  Did you ever take any English classes in elementary school???
